Interactive Maps

Interactive maps, e. g. as made available on the internet, play an increasingly important role in the area of scientific and user-oriented questions. Amongst others, they enable the user to view specific sections of a map, to search for objective data, or to download material. Applications such as the „internet-roadmap“ are one of the first examples for this.

In the science sector, the availability of geological data via the internet supports the information exchange and the interdisciplinary collaboration since it supplies a collective view of the data base and its spatial distribution.

Directions for installing and using interactive maps

An interactive design consists mainly of the following:

  • The interactive map
  • An index of the information location (by selecting the (x) symbol the locations become visible or are being hidden, respectively
  • tool-selection for zooming, queries, etc...

This map shows the distribution of so-called mud volcanoes on the ocean floor as well as on land. Mud volcanoes on the sea floor are often marked by high concentrations and the release of methane.

The user can add or delete additional geological data to the map through the „index of Geo-Information“.
