Aeromagnetics
Aeromagnetic surveys are regularly carried out in the Arctic and Antarctic regions by the use of the German research aircraft Polar-2. This is a Dornier Do-228 which is modified to meet the requirements to safely operate in the polar regions. For the special task of aeromagnetic data acquisition steel parts at the wing tips of the plane were removed and replaced by non-magnetic components. Two Scintrex CS-2 Cesium magnetometers are mounted at the wing tips of the aircraft. For the compensation of the remaining interference field caused by the body of the aircraft and the movement of the aircraft in the earth magnetic field an “automatic aeromagnetic digital compensator” (AADCII, by RMS instruments) is used.
Technical Specifications:
- Magnetic field range: 20000 – 100000 nT
- Resolution: 1 pT
- Accuracy of compensation: 0.035 nT (std)
- Sampling rate: 10 Hz
