POLAR 2

Polar 2 is a research aircraft, which has owned and operated by AWI since 1983.
This twin-engined plane is a special version of the Dornier 228/101 multipurpose plane. Skis can be fitted to the undercarriage, enabling them to take off and land on concrete or snow. The aircraft is specially equipped for operations in polar regions, with enhanced specifications, powerful generators, extra fuel tanks, de-icing equipment on propellers and wings, and improved insulation of the cabin. It carry modern navigation systems (Global Positioning System, GPS), is ifr-equipped (instrumental flight rules) and ables to land under white-out conditions. The maximum take-off weight is almost seven tonnes.
