Sea ice within the climate system

Sea ice plays a key role for the climate and eco systems, and changes in the Arctic and Antarctic sea ice covers have large impacts, also beyond the polar regions. We are focusing on effects of sea ice for the climate system and our research topics are mostly define to improve our understanding of

  • Physical properties and processes of sea ice,
  • The radiation budget of ice covered oceans,
  • The exchange of energy, mass, and momentum between atmosphere, ice, and ocean, and
  • The fresh-water balance of the Arctic ocean and adjacent seas.
