... Arctic Mid Ocean Ridge Expedition

Synonym: ARKXVII/2
Date: July - October 2001
Region: Gakkel Ridge, Fram Strait
Participants: Jörg Bareiss, Christian Haas , Guido Kubas, Jan Lieser, Bernhard Mackowiak, Anette Scheltz, Henrike Schünemann, Sandra Schuster, Vladimir Shevchenko

The AMORE cruise of RV Polarstern (Arctic Mid Ocean Ridge Expedition, Ark 17/2) led to the Transpolar Drift and North Pole between  July 31 and October 03, 2001, mainly to study the petrophysics and geology of the Gakkel Ridge. However, it provided a unique opportunity for sea ice observations in this important region of the Arctic Ocean, in particular of ice thickness and melt ponding.

The goal of the sea ice program was to study geophysical, biological, geological, and chemical aspects of the ice in the Transpolar Drift. The sea ice group consisted of three groups from AWI, Institute for Polar Ecology (IPÖ, Kiel), and Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (Moscow). Almost all floes had to be entered by helicopter, requiring one to three flights to carry all material and personnel to the station floe. Despite partially difficult weather conditions and the occupation of helicopters by other groups, 54 floes could be sampled. Additionally, airborne electromagnetic (EM) ice thickness measurements were performed.
