Dynamical and chemical influences on the ozone layer (CANDIDOZ)

The EU project CANDIDOZ and the German BMBF project AFO2000-DYCHO focussed on the different chemical and dynamical processes that determine the global ozone distribution. While the chemical change was investigated quite thoroughly in the last 20 years, the transport of ozone by the residual circulation has just recently been put into perspective as an important contributor to the year-to-year variability in ozone columns and profiles at all latitudes.  more...

Global Implications of Arctic climate processes and feedbacks (GLIMPSE)

The earth's climate is mainly determined by the spatial structure of large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns and their associated temporal changes. Climate variations on seasonal and decadal time scales are influenced by externally and anthropogenically caused climate variability as well by the global dynamics of preferred oscillation modes of the coupled atmosphere-ocean-sea-ice system. Regional feedback mechanisms in the Arctic climate system, like sea-ice albedo and decoupling of the surface climate and the free troposphere in the stable planetary boundary layer have the potential to influence the global climate.  more ...

Quantifying the carbon budget in Northern Russia: past, present and future (CARBO-North)

The EU project CARBO-North aims in the carbon budget in Northern Russia across temporal and spatial scales. Transient responses of the ecosystem are of great importance from a policy perspective. How quick will the treeline migrate? How quickly will permafrost thaw? Regional climate model will provide input to ecosystem studies. Analyses will be conducted to assess the sensitivity of climate model output to a suite of land cover, ground and permafrost schemes. more...
