Optical Particle Counter OPC

Purpose of Participation

  • Airborne in-situ total aerosol number density of the accumulation mode aerosol > 0.26 µm in close to dry state
  • Airborne in-situ aerosol size distribution between 0.26 and 2.2 µm

Instrument description

The OPC (GRIMM, model 7.309) delivers single particle counts and size classification based on aerosol scattering properties in a real time.

Species Aerosols
Method Direct concentration measurements
Quantity primary Aerosol number concentration/Aerosol size distribution
Quantity secondary
Measurement range Particles between 0.26 and 2.2 µm up to 2000 pp*cm-3
Altitude range 0 - aircraft max altitude
Vertical resolution Depends or ascend and descend velocity
Temporal resolution 1 sec
Operation Cabin T > 0°C
Precision Depends on aerosol concentration, reproducibility ±3%
Preliminary data in principle next day (man power dependent)
Final data one year

Specific remarks

  • Ambient p and T from POLAR 4 basic instrumentation are required to derive ambient concentrations
