MICROTOPS II OZONOMETER
Purpose of Participation
- Obtaining information on ozone content and aerosol optical thickness at 1020 nm.
- Extension of lidar FLS-12 aerosol optical thickness data to the 1020 nm range.
Instrument description
MICROTOPS II is a 5 channel hand-held ozonometer for measuring total ozone column. The MICROTOPS II can measure total water vapor (936 nm) and aerosol optical thickness (AOT) at 1020 nanometers.
| Species | Aerosol optical thickness and ozon content |
| Method | Direct solar ultraviolet radiation at 3 discrete wavelengths within the UV-B range is measured and stored. |
| Quantity primary | Solar radiation |
| Quantity secondary | Ozone content and aerosol optical thickness |
| Spectral range | 1020 nm |
| Altitude range | Total atmosphere column |
| Vertical resolution | Direct solar measurement |
| Temporal resolution | 20 s |
| Operation | Clear sky conditions |
| Precision | Low noise electronics and a 20 bit A/D converter allow high linearity, resolution and dynamic range. |
| Data availability (during campaign) | Weekly |
| Final availability (after campaign) | Three months |
Specific remarks
- The ozone and total water vapor calculation algorithms are programmed into the MICROTOPS II and the final results of all stored scans can be viewed on the LCD. The raw data is also stored to allow retrospective adjustments of algorithms. Each data point is annotated with date, time, site coordinates, solar angle, altitude, pressure and temperature.
