Atmospheric Investigations on a Drifting station in the Arctic Sea
During autumn/winter 2007/08 AWI will participate in the Russian North Pole Drifting Station 35 (NP-35) in order to probe the Arctic planetary boundary layer with the help of a tethered balloon and the troposphere/stratosphere with ozonesondes, respectively.
Arctic Study of Tropospheric Aerosols, Clouds and Radiation (ASTAR)
A third of three Arctic campaigns aiming in tropospheric aerosol, cloud and radiation research will take place in 2007. It will improve the assessment of the aerosol direct and indirect effects on the Arctic radiative balance. This will be achieved by utilizing unique aircraft instrumental payloads, addressing both aerosol and cloud measurements, combined with ground-based and satellite observations and by using appropriate modeling tools.
Determination of Stratospheric Polar Ozone Losses (Match)
Since the winter 1994/95 AWI coordinates in most Arctic winters and in a single Antarctic winter the ozonesoundings in the polar and subpolar regions in order to determine with a sophisticated approach the chemical ozone depletion in the stratosphere. Between 1991/92 and 1993/94 this approach had been used passively. more...
