50 years Helgoland Roads
2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the inception of the Helgoland Roads time series, including the phytoplankton, salinity and nutrient measurements (except silicate which was started in 1966).
Helgoland Roads is unique in that samples are taken daily. This has facilitated analyses on a wide range of topics from long-term trends in plankton diversity via food web dynamics to the dynamics of spring blooms. Researchers around the world are using these data in their analyses. They are invaluable for the parameterization of models and are a vital tool for the monitoring activities of Federal and local agencies involved in environmental management and protection.
We will celebrate this important anniversary with a series of events:
Already confirmed are:
- A symposium with international participation to review long-term-trends in time series at North Sea, European and global scales. The symposium will take place in September 2012 and is anticipated to last 4 days. The last day of the symposium will be devoted to a miniworkshop with the Marine Biological institute Murmansk to carry out joint analyses on benthic and planktonic time series.
- A special Helgoland Roads session at the ASLO summer meeting that will be held at Lake Biwa, Japan July 7-13 2012. Session abstract
