Project Autecologic atlas of North and Baltic Sea bottom fauna

Epifauna on stony ground with sea anemones (Metridium senile), sea urchin (Echinus esculentus) and edible crab (Cancer pagurus); © Hübner, Krause (BfN, 2000).

• “Mission Statement”

Autecological atlas of benthic invertebrates in the German part of North Sea and Baltic Sea

• Research Rationale

The atlas combines the existing knowledge about biology and autecology of benthic invertebrates beyond 10 m depth. Primary objective is to present preferences and distributions of species in relation to the abiotic environment. The information about autecology are based on data analyses, and the information about biology are taken from literature.
This project is carried out in cooperation with the Institute for Applied Ecology Ltd. (IfAÖ) and is financed by the German Federal Ministry for Science and Education (BMBF).

• Research Topics

Benthic invertebrate fauna of the German North and Baltic seas:
Biology (e. g. reproduction, nutrition, mobility, distribution)
Autecology (influences of e. g. salinity, water depth, sediment parameters)

• Staff

Dr. Eike Rachor     Scientist, appointee for marine environmental protection
Manuela Gusky     Scientist
