Granulometric investigations off Sylt

Sedimentology started from zero in the beginning of 2002. Laboratory basics have just been bought and installed and the first samples are being analyzed. We are still waiting for a sedimentation balance that will be installed later this year.

Goals of the investigations include

  • Granulometric sediment characterization of samples from the immediate working area. Data will be put in relation to current speed and possible influence of wind-speed (eolian transport).
  • Evaluation of sediment characteristics as a control for vegetation such as seagrass.
  • Influence of vegetation on the sediment distribution in the Wadden Sea off northern Sylt.
  • Influence of mussels and oysters on the granulometry of the ambient sediments.
  • Paleoceanography and paleoclimate development of the Holocene North Sea (see investigations in the Skagerrak).
