Longterm Ecological Research
Long - term changes in the Benthos of the Sylt-Rømø Bight
Biological research at Sylt has a long tradition. As early a 1867, the concept of biozoenose was developed by Karl Moebius. Since then, many scientist have investigated several aspects of the Wadden Sea around Sylt. A comparison of the present situation with older descriptions shows profound changes in the ecosystem. Subtidal seegrasses, Sabellaria reefs and oysterbeds (Ostrea edulis) have disappeared and musselbeds have increased. Other exotic species have been introduced since those early days. Since 1988 Crassostrea pacifica is regularly observed and locally reaches high numbers.
