The Wadden Sea is a unique area with extensive intertidal flats. It provides habitats for a rich flora and fauna which is adapted to the extreme dynamic conditions prevailing in the Wadden Sea. Ecological field research by the Wadden Sea Station Sylt is known world-wide. The vicinity of its primary research object – tidal flats - make special experimental approaches possible. In addition, mariculture of macroalgae is established as a new field of research. Both fields already attract many visiting scientists. For many years, universities organize student courses at our station. In addition, an increasing number of workshops and special courses have s been organized in recent years.

In 2004 and 2005 the Wadden Sea Station Sylt will be extended and modernized to improve the research facilities for students and visiting scientist.
