Projects of the AWI Deep-Sea Research Group supported by the „European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures“ (ESFRI):
EMSO (European Multidisciplinary Seafloor Observatory Infrastructure)
Duration: Preparatory Phase 01.04.2008 – 31.03.2011
Coordinator: Paolo Favali, Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), Italy
EMSO is an infrastructure project, with the main objective of establishing the legal and governance framework for the infrastructure serving scientists and other stakeholders in Europe and outside Europe for long-term deep-water observation and investigation.

SIOS (Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System)
Duration: Preparatory Phase 2008 – 2010, Construction Phase 2010 – 2012, Operations 2012 onwards
Coordinator: Gunnar Sand, University Centre Svalbard (UNIS), Norway
The goal of the SIOS initiative is to establish an Arctic Earth Observing System in and around Svalbard that integrates studies of geophysical, chemical and biological processes from all marine and terrestrial research and monitoring platforms.

ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System)
Duration: Preparatory Phase 2008 – 2012, Operations 2012
Coordinator: Philippe Ciais, Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement, CEA-CNRS-UVSQ, France
The goal of ICOS is to provide long-term observations required to understand the present state and to predict future behaviour of the global carbon cycle and greenhouse gas emissions as well as to assess and monitor the effectiveness of carbon sequestration and/or greenhouse gases emission reduction activities on global atmospheric composition levels.
