Projects and Collaborations

In addition to the work outlined in our main projects, i.e. "Time-series studies at the deep-sea long-term observatory HAUSGARTEN" and "Structure, dynamic and evolution of microbial habitats", members of the working group are also involved in several national and international projects, which may be summarized in different categories.

Projects of the AWI Deep-Sea Group financially supported by the EU aim to establish a European network of deep-sea observatories, to study natural and anthropogenic impacts on deep-sea biodiversity, and to investigate the effects of oxygen depletion processes on aquatic ecosystems.

In the frame of the „European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures“ (ESFRI), we contribute to the establishment of the legal and governance structure for long-term  deep-water observations, and intend to provide long-term observations to understand effects of the greenhouse gas emissions on the global carbon cycle.

Moreover, we are involved in different sub-projects of the “Census of Marine Life” (CoML) to assess the biodiversity and biogeography of various deep-sea ecosystems.

Other projects with contributions of the AWI Deep-Sea Group could be found here.
