Information of the Helmholtz Association on the World Climate Summit in Durban

28 November 2011. For those, who are familiar with German: The Climate Service Center (CSC) of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht und the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig will regurlarly report from the World Climate Summit in Durban. Climate economist Prof. Reimund Schwarze (CSC/UFZ) und Johannes Förster from UFZ are in Durban and will give regular up-to-date information. Special information are also published by the Helmholtz Association


 

 

100th anniversary of Alfred Wegener's Continental Drift Theory at Senckenberg Naturmuseum (Franfurt am Main)

7 November 2011.  Honouring the 100th anniversary of Alfred Wegener's famous lecture, the Senckenberg Institute will host - together with the Alfred Wegener Institute - a colloquium at the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt, Germany.

18:00: Public lecture (in German language) "Alfred Wegener - Vordenker der Geowissenschaften", Presenter: Dr. Reinhard Krause, Alfred-Wegener-Institut


The colloquium will be accompanied by an exhibition with photos, movies and exhibits concerning Alfred Wegener.


 

Willy-Brandt Award 2011 for Jörn Thiede

2. November 2011. Prof. Dr. Jörn Thiede wins the Willy-Brandt Prize 2011 for his important role in developing the German-Norwegian cooperations in science. The former director of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmhotz Association is honoured for his intensive engagement in the bilateral relations with Norway. For example he is member of the German-Norwegian Friendship Society and the Royal Norwegian Science Society. His university career has taken him to Bergen, Oslo and Spitsbergen. Thiede is going to receive the award together with Norwegian journalist Therese Bjørneboe on November 28th in the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Berlin. They ar going to be honoured by the Norwegian Minister of Culture Anniken Huitfeldt and Frank-Water Steinmeyer (SPD Secretary-General and Germany's former Minister for Foreign Affairs).
