Guided Tours at the "Scientific Diving Centre", Helgoland

Annual ATC Meeting in Argentina

20 June 2011.  The "XXXIV Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting" (ATCM) is taking place in Buenos Aires until July 1st.  Scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute are participating in this meeting.


On the occasion of Germany's 30 years of consultative status in the Antarctic Treaty, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety has recently pulished a brochure titled "Germany’s Commitment to the White Continent" which you can download here.

 

Honoring the fact that Buenos Aires is hosting the annual ATCM, the Argentine Government issued a new stamp, showing S. Gütz - a former AWI scientist who did research projects at various Argentine stations in Antarctica based on a cooperation between the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) and the Instituto Antartico Argentino (IAA).

 

 


 

IPSO Report: Massive Marine Extinction Predicted

20 June 2011.  A new report released today contains scientific findings that are truly alarming for the future of the world's ocean.

The results were presented during an international workshop at Oxford University in April and now published by IPSO - International Programme on the State of the Ocean. "In my opinion, mankind has taken numerous marine ecosystems to their limits," says Professor Dr Jelle Bijma, Alfred Wegener Institute, who participated in the workshop and contributed to the report.

IPSO is an international consortium of scientists and other experts, identifying the problems affecting the global ocean, projecting future outcomes and developing workable solutions.

"Curiosities in Science"

A touring exhibition - currently shown in Potsdam

14 June 2011.  Today, on June 14, the touring exhibition „Wunderkammer Wissenschaft“ of the Helmholtz Association is opening at the Potsdamer Bahnhofspassagen. More than 500 acoustically moving pictures are presented: a science exhibition that almost only focuses on pictures. By no means, the exihibtion is a classic science exhibition with samples but for amazement. Therefore, you are more than welcome to take a closer look.

Opening hours: 9:30 am - 8 pm (Saturdays: 9:30 am-6 pm, Sundays: closed) from 14 June 2011 until 9 July 2011

Entrance is free.
