Memorandum on Scientific Co-operation signed in Murmansk

18 Febuary 2011. Prof. Dr. Gennady G. Matishov, director/chair of two institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Murmansk Marine Biological Institute  and Southern Scientific Centre RAS) and Prof. Dr. Karin Lochte, direktor Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association, signed a Memorandum for continuation of the scientific cooperation earlier this week. Founding director of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Prof. Dr. Gotthilf Hempel accompanied them in Murmansk. He had initiated a first cooperation agreement with the Russian colleagues exactly twenty years earlier on Febuary 15th 1991.

The memorandum sets the course for further cooperation in polar and marine research. It includes cooperation in areas (e.g. Arctic) and on topics (e.g. bio- geo ans climate sciences). The partners also agreed on mutual utilization of facilities and instruments and the development of joint research projects as well as corporate scientific meetings.

TV-Report about Neumayer Station III in Antarctica

16 Febuary 2011. The German tv channel NDR broadcasts the report "Adventure Antarctica - Scientists in Eternal Ice" on Wednesday 16 Febuary from 23:10 to 23:40. A camera-team accompanied professor Heinrich Miller, deputy director of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, last December to the German Antarctic Station Neumayer III. They report on the scienfic work conducted at the station, such as changes in ice masses, sea level rise, and climate change.

Symposium: Focus on Climate Change - Can our planet be saved?

15 Febuary 2011. Prof. Dr. Jörn Thiede and Prof. Dr. Peter Lemke participate in the sympisium "Focus on Climate Change  - Can our planet be saved?" next Friday, Febuary 18th. Together with Prof. Dr. Guy Brasseur and Dr. Victor Brovkin they are going to discuss the human impact on climate change by greenhouse gas emissions and  varied land use for instance in the Academy of Science and Literature. Another of the syposium, which is part of the series "Futere Questions of the Society", are the consequences of climate change for developing countries.

The symposium takes place in the Academy of Science and Literature, Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 2, 55131 Mainz, Germany on Febuary 18th 2011 from 15:30 to 18:00. Further infomration can be found on the following websites of the academy (German only):

Film Festval "Poles Apart" in Ottawa

8 Febuary 2011. The film festival "Poles Apart" currently takes place at the Goethe Institut in Ottawa, Canada. During the festival "Winterlude", the Goethe Institut, the British Council, the Alfred Wegener Institut, the University of Ottawa and WWF Global Arctic Programme are presenting featuring documentaries about the Arctic and Antarctic. On Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011: noon to 10 pm and Friday, Feb. 11, 2011: noon to 10 pm arctic and antarctic documentaries are shown in the Amphitheatre, room 1124, Saint Paul University, 223 Main Street, Ottawa.

Among them are three productions in cooperation with the Alfred Wegener Institute: "When the Poles Melt – Expedition Antarctica" (Germany 2010, English, 52 min.), produced by Hoferichter & Jacobs, directed by Kai Vogtländer; "Secrets in Siberian Ice" (Germany 2008, English, 52 min.), produced by Hoferichter & Jacobs, directed by Jörg Poppendieck; "Crossing of the Polar Sea without heading" (Germany 2008, English, 30 min.), produced by Rundfunkt Berlin-Brandenburg, directed by Judith Rhode.

Fully booked - Great rush on Girls' Day 2011

7 Febuary 2011. Where does the Earth move? How are maps developed? These questions and five others are objectives of workshops at the Alfred Wegener Instituts Girls' Day on April 14th 2011. The 70 places are already completely booked. The Girls' Day is an initiative for girls to get in contact with science, research, and everything related to it.
