Happy 70th Birthday Professor Jörn Thiede!
17 April 2011. The former director of the Alfred Wegener Institute celebrates his 70th birthday today. The staff of the institute congratulate him warmly and wish him all the best and a lot of energy for the next years.
Thiede is still engaged in national and international science. He was among the winners of funding from the Russian Ministry of Education and Science last year, which enables him to build up a laboratory “Paleogeography and geomorphology of polar countries and the World Ocean” in St. Petersburg. His research themes are state of the art: the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research has proclaimed 2011 the German-Russian Science Year.
Avalanche Forecast in the Alps
6 April 2011. To develop situation reports about avalanche, information about the structure of the snow cover is needed. Recording these data in avalanche regions is dangerous for persons. Therefore a team of scientists from Switzerland, Austria, and Germany set themselves the goal to measure the internal layers of the snow automatically by the means of radar technologies. Amongst them is Dr Olaf Eisen from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. A press release from the University of Applied Sciences FH Joanneum can be found here (German only). Further information about the Emmy-Noether-Group of Olaf Eisen is given here.
