In cooperation with the scientific divisions the logistics department is in charge of preparing and implementing ships' expeditions, flight missions, station operations (summer and wintering), field expeditions (summer) into polar regions (Arctic and Antarctica), carried out by the Alfred Wegener Institute.

Prior to participation the research application must have been approved by the the Alfred Wegener Institute and/or another research institution and incorporated in the planning of the expedition leg during a coordination meeting.

It is mandatory to pay attention to following instructions and formalities when planning to participate:

External expeditions

The logistics department also offers advice and support to participants of other national programmes who would like to join the expedition. In this case a written application with a short summary of the scientific programme and cooperation partner, target area, operation period and equipment required must be sent to the logistics department.
Please note: For RV Polarstern cruises a formal application is required.
