Opportunities for external scientists to conduct research at Helgoland marine station

The use of laboratories is free of charge. The costs for the supply of organisms and the order form are here available. Besides the possibility of collecting algae and animals from the intertidal, sublittoral organisms can be supplied through the institute’s dive group. We kindly ask visting scientists to place their orders themselves directly from the dive group, using the biota order form. The research vessels ‘Uthörn’ and ‘Aade’ are available for collection of plankton and sublittoral samples. Flow-through systems are provided for cultivation of organisms. A constant temperature room can be used to cultivate samples or to conduct experiments. Five renovated wet laboratories with internet connections, seawater taps and standard laboratory equipment are available, each offering work space for two people. The use of advanced laboratory instruments requires consultation with the technical assistant Mrs. Margret Krüß (margret.kruess@awi.de, Tel: 04725-819 3212).  Please download the Bulletin for handling chemical substances.

Visiting scientists will be asked to present their field of speciality as well as their planned project at the beginning of their stay. If the stay of a visiting scientist results in one or more publications, we require an acknowledgement and ask for a reprint. The reprint will be documented and accessible to staff and future visiting scientists. If no publication is to be expected on short term, we require a one-page report on the main results. The team ‘Gastforschung’ of the marine station is aimed at functioning as a link between the staff of the marine station and former visiting scientists to foster existing contacts and initiate joint projects.

Scientists, planning to conduct research at the marine station should contact Dr. Molis (markus.molis(at)awi.de, Tel: 04725-819 3239). He will assist you in deciding on the practicability of your research project; set you in contact with study groups of the institute, and is the person to whom applications should be sent (downloads form as doc or pdf).

Please note information for gaining access to AWI wireless network.

Library services

Visiting scientists acquire access to the extensive library of the marine station as well as a connection to the online AWI-library with 1000 open serial titles. Literature which will not be available online, can be ordered from the main library of the AWI, usually within 24 h. Please contact our librarian Mrs. Ute Alexander for details (ute.alexander(at)awi.de, Tel.: 04725-819-3339).
