Fungi

A total of 64 species of fungi has been identified around Helgoland.

 

Botany

The flora in the waters around Helgoland includes 194 species (numbers in parentheses) of phytoplankton (Bacillariophyceae [112] and Dinophyceae [82]) and 274 species of brown, red, and green macroalgae.

 

Zoology

More than 320 species of the Helgoland zooplankton fauna from 9 caldes have been recorded: Cnidaria (66), Ctenophora (5), Plathelminthes (min. 2), Mollusca (min. 2), Annelida (25), Arthropoda (154), Chaetognatha (min. 3), Echinodermata (8), Chordata (Ascidia [4], Acrania [min. 2] and Vertebrata [52]).

 

At least 628 zoobenthic species from 13 clades exist around Helgoland: Porifera (25), Cnidaria (54), Nemertini (16), Priapulida (1), Kamptozoa (5), Mollusca (Polyplacophora [2], Gastropoda [86], Bivalvia [44], Cephalopoda [3]), Sipunculida [5], Echiurida [1], Annelida (Polychaeta [139], Oligochaeta [2], Hirudinea [1]), Arthropoda (Chelicerata [10], Crustacea [147], Insecta [3]), Tentaculata (Phoronida [2] und Bryozoa [48]), Echinodermata (16), Chordata (Tunicata [16] and Acrania [min. 2]).

 

Four species of marine mammals permanently live around Helgoland.
