Archive Status Reports: December 12 th - January 2nd

03.02.08:

Unloading of Naja Arctica has been completed at 17:15 UTC. The ship left Atka Bay at 22:10 UTC for Cape Town.

31.1.08:

Construction of Neumayer-Station III is moving ahead in good weather conditions. The foundation has been laid, now the bearing structure of the lower basement is mounted.  The construction team aims to finish the basement including its roof cover as soon as possible and until the end of the Antarctic summer. Unloading of Naja Arctica will presumably be completed until Sunday, 3rd of February.

13.01.08: The shelf ice margin is still not accesible for Naja Arctica. Due to the upcoming storm,  RV Polarstern left the  sea ice area of Atka-Bay and continued its scientific program.
RV Polarstern will continue its opperation by the morning of January 14th. Captain Pahl is still optimistic to provide a navigation channel for Naja Arctica within the next few days.

10.01.08: Weather and ice situation still unchanged. At January 9th, Polarstern reached the Position of Naja Arctica at Atka-Bay. After arrival, ice survey was carried out by helicopter. It was decide, to break an ice track at the shortes distance to the shelf ice edge of approx. 1,45 nm.

07.01.08:Situation still unchanged. It is decided thet ice-breaking research vessel Polarstern will interrupt its current scientific expedition and return to Atka-Bay. After arrival  (presumably  January 9th or 10th)  Polarstern will try to break a navigation channel into the sea ice and help Naja Arctica to reach its unloading position at the edge of the ice shelf.
02.01.08: Situation unchanged
28.12.07: Position of Naja Arctica unchanged.
26.12.07: Position of Naja Arctica remains as unchanged as the weather conditions. Still waiting for break-up of sea ice to reach the planned unloading position.
21.12.07: No change of weather conditions to be expected. Unloading of the ship at the current position is not possible, as the sea ice is only sustainable for 10 to 11 tons and structural components are too heavy.
20.12.07: Position of Naja Arctica unchanged.
19.12.07: Weather is bright and stable, situation remains unchanged.
18.12.07: Naja Arctica reached the former sea ice unloading position of Polarstern at Atka Bay. Present Position: 70°33,47’S / 007°40,83’W, waiting for weather change  to break up the sea ice. The planned unloading position is 2 to 3 km away.
17.12.07: Naja Arctica is approaching Atka Bay, there are still 10 nautical miles to go.
16.12.07: Naja Arctica is in a distance of 30 nautical miles to Neumayer Station. Fog.
12.12.07: Motor Vessel Naja Arctica is transporting Neumayer Station III to Antarctica.Present Position: 62°18'S / Greenwich Meridian, Course 180°, Speed 8 knots, Ice coverage 8/10 but enough water between the floes to pass through very easily.
