The Atmospheric Observatory of the AWIPEV Base

The atmospheric observatory (formerly also called "NDACC observatory", after the "Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change", now NDACC) is the central facility of the AWIPEV Base for atmospheric observations with a special focus on the stratosphere. The building was designed to simultaneously fit the historical character of the Ny-Ålesund settlement and to accomodate state-of-the-art scientific equipment. It was built in 1993/1994 for AWI and officially inaugurated in 1995.

The observatory serves: 

• standard meteorological measurements
• tropospheric observations
• stratospheric observations
