Expedition Summary
The expedition ANT-XXIII/9 has a geoscientific topic. Polarstern cruises along the Antarctic coast eastward to an area, never investigated before. The programme concentrates on marine geological sampling for the glacial-marine reconstruction of the Quaternary environmental history and a geophysical segment with the geodynamic development of the continental margin between Prydz Bay and Kerguelen Plateau. In addition, field groups will concentrate on climate and environmental reconstructions in ice-free areas in the vicinity of Prydz Bay, also investigating the Antarctic permafrost and its living forms. A map is also being made along the cruise track of the chemistry of the surface waters as part of an international programme (GEOTRACES).
