Helgoland Marine Research

“Helgoland Marine Research“ is a scientific journal of long tradition. Its first issue was released way back in 1894, two years after the foundation of the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland (BAH), under the title “Wissenschaftliche Meeresuntersuchungen – Abteilung Helgoland”. The worldwide distribution of this journal and its followers “Helgoländer wissenschaftliche Meeresuntersuchungen” (1937 to 1978) and “Helgoländer Meeresuntersuchungen” (1979 to 1998) has contributed significantly to make Helgoland widely famous as a site of excellent research in marine biology.
When in 1998 the BAH became part of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven, the journal was completely relaunched. While originally restricted to papers describing the research performed at the BAH, the journal had opened up almost in the 1960s to contributions of scientists from all over the world. The international authorship of the journal made it desirable to entrust a large scientific publisher with its publication and distribution. Thus, an agreement was reached with Springer-Verlag, Berlin Heidelberg New York to publish the journal under the English title “Helgoland Marine Research”, in a new format and layout. Since then, the journal is also available as a full-text electronic edition accessible through Springer’s LINK information system.
The journal publishes original research papers on any aspect and level of the biology of marine organisms. Preference is given to research results from European seas. Papers are published “online first” and citable with the DOI about four weeks after acceptance. Information as to the preparation and submission of manuscripts is available from Springer’s server.
