New measures of data storage and archiving were implemented in 2005.

The central archival storage system now replicates up to 100 Terabyte of data into two robotic tape archives (Sun/Storagetek SL8500), which are located in separate buildings (D and E, in Bremerhaven).

A pool of some 1000 tapes and associated tape drives act as the near-line part to the 40 TB SAN-based online disk-cache of the SAMFS-Filesystem installed in a SunFire 15000 (SF15k) domain.

The backup facilities work on high capacity tape drives and media (LTO/3), also installed in this SL8500/SF15k environment.
