Computing and Data Centre
The services provided by AWI's Computing and Data Centre cover a broad range of items: From basic IT support for AWI members to high performance scientific computing used in climate studies and advice regarding information and communication systems aspects for internal and external users of AWI's general infrastructure offerings to the scientific community.
Over time, the Computing and Data Centre developed and layed the foundations for interoperable information systems for archiving and managing metadata/data on scientists and their datasets and publications, organizational units and field events (i.e., expeditions, campaigns).
The e-Infrastructure built, commisioned, supervised and operated to enable these services and systems comprises local area networks at the AWI sites, stations and ships as well as their wide area and satellite-based interconnects, computer rooms and stacks of servers, redundant Terabyte robotic tape archives and state of the art supercomputers.
We offer vocational training for local students as well als interships and work on diploma theses - mostly in cooperation with regional universities - as educational opportunities.
