Ships, Stations, Data Bases and more

Polarstern, the research icebreaker of the Alfred Wegener Institute, represents the outstanding research tool of German polar research. However, additional vessels are also available for scientists.

In the Arctic and Antarctic, research is conducted at research stations, some of which are manned year-round, such as Neumayer Station and the AWIPEV research base.

Polar aircraft and underwater research facilities provide other large-scale infrastructure.

All large-scale equipment is coordinated through the logistics department of the Alfred Wegener Institute. Scientists intending to use such equipment will find the information they need with the logistics team.

The AWI-Centre for Scientific Diving is the central platform for all scientific dive missions.

Other infrastructure of the institute includes the libraries, various data bases and software solutions, acquired or often developed specifically for the institution.
