Comparison sea water / fresh water

Sampling at the beach
The sea and fresh water day is a project for pupils of the 4th grade and takes place in co-operation of the Biological Institute Helgoland (BAH) and the James Kruess school Helgoland. The topic of that two- days-project is: "Fresh water and North Sea, two different habitats in the comparison".
Both days cover a excursion to the Düne with a following evaluation in the laboratory of the BAH. To find out the differences of the two habitats biological, chemical and physical methods are used.

In the laboratory the pupils are working on their samples to analyse the data afterwards. Thus they get an interesting view of the scientific world. The scientists of the BAH support the pupils with advice and help.
The pupils get to know how to determine the salinity of the different water samples as well as to define the pH-value of the individual samples. Later on they have the possiblity to stack water.
