Building a binocular

Working on the large turning lathe

In cooperation with the James-Krüss-Schule Helgoland the Biological Institute Helgoland is offering a compulsory optional subject for the 9th and 10th grade of the secondary school. In the year 2006/2007 this course is about 'Building a binocular'.

 

The students get to know the theoretical bascis at school by their teacher of physics. Afterwards the students work together with the specialised staff of the Biological Institute Helgoland in the workshop of the institute.

 

There they learn how to work with big machines, especially turning lathes. They mill, file, bore and lathe and at the end they will have build a binocular all by themselve.
