Marine Lightweight Structures
Since many years the Alfred Wegener Institute contributes to biological oceanography and plankton research, and operates the Friedrich-Hustedt Diatom Collection. Proceeding from this in-depth knowledge the principles of high structural strength of these otherwise extremely light diatom skeletons are transferred into technological application. Main objectives are:
- Structure modelling from marine microstructures
- Marine nano materials
- Industrial design from marine bionic structures
- Originality tracers from marine particles
In this field innovation transfer is no one-step process. Therefore AWI collaborates with strong partners such as IMARE and within the Virtual Institute PlanktonTech
