Dulse (Palmaria palmate)
Dulse (Palmaria palmate) is a red seaweed that grows attached to rocks or artificial substrates by its holdfast. The distribution includes both sides from the North Atlantic and Northwest Pacific. Dulse grows from the intertidal into deeper waters. Fronds may vary from rose to reddish-purple and range from about 18 to 42 cm. From June through September Palmaria palmata it is picked by hand at low tide and than further manufactured depending on the different target groups. (Fig. 1). The distribution includes both sides from the North Atlantic.
Palmaria palmata has long been used as a healthy sea vegetable because of its high nutritionally value. Dulse is a good source of minerals and vitamins, because it contains major trace elements needed in human physiological processes. Further, dulse has a high protein content in quantity and quality.
