Das Programm der "Helmholtz-Hochschul-Nachwuchsgruppen" soll den besten ausländischen und inländischen Nachwuchsforschern herausragende Arbeitsbedingungen in einem forschungsorientierten Umfeld bieten. Am Alfred-Wegener-Institut sind im Moment gemeinsam mit den Universitäten Bremen und Heidelberg, vier Helmholtz-Nachwuchsgruppen eingerichtet:

• Applications of compound-specific 14C analysis for the study of sedimentation processes and carbon cycling in marine sediments
• Sensitivity of the permafrost system's water and energy balance under changing climate: a multiscale perspective
• PHYTOOPTICS - Marine Phytoplankton studied by global biooptical methods
• PLANKTONSENS - Assessing Climate Related Variability and Change at the Base of Planktonic Food Webs in Polar Regions and the North Sea
