Permafrost Deposits & Palaeoclimate

Cliff of an Ice Complex at the Laptev Sea Coast

To understand the development of the periglacial permafrost areas of Northern Siberia and their reactions to climate and environmental change during the Late Quaternary on global and regional scale.

Syncryogenic permafrost sequences were studied in detail in the areas surrounding the Laptev Sea during the expeditions "Taymyr 1994-1996î and "Lena Delta 1998-2000" by means of geocryology, sedimentology, geochemistry, mineralogy, paleobotany (pollen, macrofossils), stable isotope geochemistry and hydrochemistry, micropaleontology (ostracods, diatoms) and pedology/ pedochemistry. Age estimates of the studied permafrost archives covering the last 200 ka were determined by AMS, conventional 14C, IR-OSL and U/Th methods.
