Stable-Isotope Facility at AWI Potsdam

Mass Spectrometer

About the Lab

The stable isotope laboratory of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Potsdam is active in research involving stable oxygen, hydrogen, carbon and nitrogen isotopes of natural materials of the polar regions of both hemispheres, e.g. many types of water and ice as well as organic material from sediments and soils. The use of these isotopes is dedicated to the reconstruction of paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental conditions in the Arctic and Antarctic polar regions.

The secretariat of the IPA task force "Isotope/Geochemistry of Permafrost" is hosted at AWI Potsdam. A questionnaire for scientists interested and active in Circum-Arctic and Circum-Antarctic isotope/geochemistry of permafrost can be answered online now (Dr. Hanno Meyer).

Facilities

The lab is equipped with the following mass spectrometers and preparation facilities

• Finnigan-MAT Delta-S:

HD, CO2, with two equilibration units for H and O isotopes, tubecracker for carbonate CO2 isotopes.

• Finnigan-MAT Delta-S (Property of DIFE, German Institute of Human Nutrition)

HD, CO2, with two equilibration units for H and O isotopes.

• Finnigan-MAT Delta-S:

CO2, N2, with Flash EA 1112 NC for C and N isotopes.

• Europa Scientific 20/20:
