The mass and shape of natural ice masses (glaciers, ice caps, ice sheets, and ice shelves) are determined by accumulation (snowfall), ablation (loss of mass as meltwater) and ice dynamics (motion of ice downhill by deformation and sliding). If these processes do not balance, the mass and shape will adjust until a new steady state is regained.
