Research Themes in Polar Biological Oceanography

The research themes of the section Polar Biological Oceanography address the role of pelagic key species or groups in structuring the morphological and genetic biodiversity, and their role in bio-geochemical processes (e.g. particle flux).

We focus on specific phytoplankton and zooplankton key species including Antarctic krill, and on organisms especially adapted to polar sea-ice.

To integrate our science, we concentrate on specific pelagic systems and characterise organism function and their response to environmental change in order to evaluate the biodiversity in marine systems.

This research is carried out in the framework of the research programme PACES and in particular in the work-packages WP 1.3, WP 1.4 and WP 1.6.

Our section contributes to fundamental biomechanic research. We ensure knowledge transfer of technical applications to industrial developments.
